De esta manera, comenz\u00f3 a tomar forma el proyecto que dar\u00eda origen a Canc\u00fan.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">La zona elegida, ubicada en el entonces Territorio de Quintana Roo, era pr\u00e1cticamente inexplorada, cubierta de dunas y manglares, sin infraestructura b\u00e1sica y era una de las regiones m\u00e1s alejadas de la Ciudad de M\u00e9xico. Tampoco contaba con un aeropuerto internacional y apenas exist\u00edan algunas brechas.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">El 23 de abril de 1970, Gustavo Verdayes Zapi\u00e9n, quien era delegado de Turismo en el Territorio de Quintana Roo, anunci\u00f3 el inicio de la construcci\u00f3n del complejo tur\u00edstico.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">Inform\u00f3 que se trabajar\u00eda las 24 horas del d\u00eda y que la primera etapa incluir\u00eda varios hoteles, un club de yates, un campo de golf y una pista de 3,500 metros que permitir\u00eda el aterrizaje de aviones de largo alcance.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">Las obras comenzaron con la construcci\u00f3n de carreteras desde Puerto Ju\u00e1rez, la habilitaci\u00f3n de un aer\u00f3dromo inicial y la limpieza de manglares y selva. Este proceso transform\u00f3 la regi\u00f3n en un modelo de planeaci\u00f3n tur\u00edstica.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;\">En sus inicios, Canc\u00fan contaba con aproximadamente 100 habitantes, considerados sus pioneros.
